It was lovely to spend some time chatting with Naomi, the landlady of the award winning pub The Endeavour, Chelmsford. If you have spare time this bank holiday weekend then do pop in, you won’t regret it!

Naomi took on the pub in November 2021 and just 14 months later she heard that the pub had been awarded ”Best Pub” by CAMRA - the Campaign for Real Ale. Unlike many other competitions, this is not one that contestants can enter themselves. The grass root members of CAMRA nominate the pubs they love. The Endeavour has gone from being the best Pub in Mid Essex to now being Best Pub in Essex!!

Naomi and I chatted in the sun trap of the little beer garden courtyard. She is clearly very fond of her customers, wanting to make sure they have a place to come for company, a natter and a good pint.

She tries to keep her prices low, she told me her motto is that “if you buy two pints of ale you should get change from a tenner”. She always has at least four different real ales on tap - today there were seven choices. She also won “runner up” for cider. The food is great & excellent value.

I asked Naomi what is the biggest challenge of being a landlord. “Sleep” she said, with a huge smile, she is always the last to bed after closing up and up early in the morning to prepare for the next day. I got the feeling she wouldn’t have it any other way! She did say she treats herself to a lie in on a Monday when the pub opens a bit later.

Naomi believes in helping others, the pubs Facebook site is currently promoting events this weekend at The Orange Tree, Chelmsford where she used to work. She wants to organise summer bbqs in her beer garden and she hopes that the work to repair the Endeavour’s roof will start and be completed soon.

Naomi’s small business gives employment to nine people, including Naomi and her partner Ben. It was great to meet some of the team who all were so happy.

The past few years have been a challenge for small businesses. Like many other small business in Chelmsford, Naomi had a hugely positive and caring attitude. I always endeavour to support our small businesses.

Please do continue to support our small businesses.
